[music |There seems to be a foxfight outside...]

So, I've been considering creating a TMI filter.

I dont know just how often I'd actually use it. But you know occassionally I feel like blabbing about things that some people may consider way too much info XD

Would probably mostly me starting conversations about generally 'tmi' subjects, as I dont like to talk about myself too personally really XD But occassionally I might. :P

Will see how it goes anyways :P

So any want in on the filter?

Purrsia.com is now Belfry Comics [Jul. 8th, 2008|04:52 pm]

tugrik
Public Webcomics Services Announcement: The new Belfry WebComics site is online!

The Belfry WebComics Index is a project started over a decade ago by my buddy and business partner [info]revar. Originally started as a way for Revar to keep track of the handful of webcomics he read on a daily basis, it grew into a larger, database-driven programming project over the years. Now indexing over 5,000 comics (and rapidly growing!) the site was upgraded to a community-driven, admin-reviewed system so that it can keep on top of the submissions.

A short primer: The Belfry Webcomics Index is a searchable archive of thousands of web comics and online graphic novels. The best way to use it is to sign up for a free account (no spam, we promise!) and 'subscribe' to the comics you read most often. This gives you a list you can go through to read your daily/weekly/etc comics, in either a frames or non-frames mode as you please. It also lets you participate in community features. New comics are added in every day and show up in a 'new comics' list you can browse and add to your subscription list as you wish.

If you're a webcomics creator and see your webcomics listed on the site, you can create an account and gain control over your sites' entries. Just let us know which are yours and we'll link them to your account. You can edit, categorize, comment or delete at will.

The Belfry site is unique in that it allows the creators of the comics to have full control over their database entries if they wish it while still letting our community submit, file and maintain new entries as they come in. This gives us a good balance of keeping updated while still offering creative control. This combo has become a significant traffic generator for a lot of webcomics in their early days. We're still surprised with how many artists have told us they're getting 'a large number of hits' from the belfry.com site.

Revar has been working on this major upgrade for the last six months. Today it finally went live, at the belfrycomics.net site. The older www.belfry.com/comics site will redirect to the new one. In addition, our "Purrsia.Com" hosting system -- some 70+ domains of webcomics, artists and personal sites -- is no longer trying to keep it's own index on the purrsia.com main page; it redirects to the belfrycomics.net site as well. Any donations that go towards Purrsia will now support the Belfry.

We currently support the site out of our own pockets, as we have since its inception. With this new release we're now able to support promotions and advertising, and we'll soon be offering advertising slots to folks within the webcomics industry. Our goal is to increase promotion of webcomics in general, so any ads we run will be for comics sites and services. We may also be running the less intrusive Google Adwords system as well. If you're curious to promote your comic (or your services to the comics industry) on The Belfry, please, let us know!

Donations are highly appreciated -- a donations button will be up soon. Buying banner ads for your webcomic, even moreso!

Give the new system a try and let us know what you think. Revar is quick to implement improvements and fixes. We know there's always going to be a few bugs to shake out any time there's a major code release, so don't be shy in telling us your thoughts on the site. Thank you, and enjoy!

Come Fly With Me [Jul. 8th, 2008|03:57 pm]

sabotlours
Here I sit in the ABQ Sunport waiting for my flight to Salt Lake. I'm amazed at the number of babies/little kids waiting for planes. You already know my feelings on the subject. There is almost nothing worse than SBS on a plane, screaming baby syndrome.

There was a story a week or so ago about a woman and child being thrown off the plane because the kid pitched a royal fit right before takeoff. The kid was autistic and somehow that was supposed to make us have sympathy to the mother's plight. Of course the flight attendants were blamed for everything, being that they were uncaring and unsympathetic to the mother's plight. There were lots and lots of comments relating to the story. There were 2 camps with about equal numbers of comments for each. One group vehemently supported the mother, saying the airline should be more caring. The other camp was made up of travelers who said that screaming babies, no matter what the reason, should not be allowed on airplanes. What was amusing was that both sides called each other selfish. Travelers without children should be considerate since we all have a RIGHT to fly. Travelers without children have a RIGHT to a quiet, enjoyable flight.

Of course I am a cruel heartless bastard. I think children should be given a large tranquilizer before any flight. Parents who fly with children should be beaten with sticks. Of course I grew up in a different era, but my parents didn't take any trips with me when I was a baby. Any vacation was somewhere close to home and drivable. I don't understand why parents today feel that they MUST transport their spawn across the country. The only argument that held water was to transport a child to a medical facility for treatment.

I don't know how many times I have seen parents transporting loads and loads of crap to support the transportation of their rugrats. Even today I was amazed at a woman who blocked an entire security line trying to get all of the diaper bags, carry-ons, and stroller onto the belt. I think she finally felt my mental knives stabbing her in the back because she allowed me to get ahead of her. I think she was still trying to get all of the crap screened well after I had put on my shoes. If I had to go through that hassle every time I traveled, there is no way Junior would be allowed on a plane until he was 10.

OK. There's my little rant for today. I know I have made it before. It's just such low-hanging fruit to bitch about when you're sitting in an airport.

Guys, meet my new BF. His name is Murphy... [Jul. 8th, 2008|01:53 pm]

[music |hum of the system]

frackingdammedfoolpainintheassweek...

Murphy once said "If something can go wrong, it will fracking GO wrong..."

and boy was he not kidding.

About a month ago, I was given a computer by someone who said that it was acting "weird" Well my suspections was well founded. Loaded with malware. Because (sigh) They took off all the protections, cause it was inconvenient That's fine I love taking $50 from you.

Well this was one of those REALLY bad cases, not only did it had about every type of malware on the market, but also it was infected with 3 root kits. A week later, with they're permission I wiped and reinstalled Windows from scratch. Thanks to MS's insanity or stupidity they gave rootkits the perfect environment to stay in for good. NOTHING I did got rid of it. It either mutated, or moved, or frankly gave me the finger. But nothing software can survive a wipe and re-install.

yet...

Well last week I was doing a routine maintainer and full system scan of malware, and yep, you guessed it. SOMEHOW a root kit was put on my system. No idea how but anymore I'm not a bit surprised. Even with the best security somehow they can sneak in. So after the experience with the system above, I thought. Just wipe the system and reinstall.

So I wiped the system and reinstalled.

BIG MISTAKE!!!

#1 I tried Terabyte disk imager once again. It works finally with the SATA drives, But I restored it wrong, and destroyed the partition table on my 1st HD. ARRRGGGGG!!! There went all my work directory, all the files I'd been meaning to burn and archive...everything wiped CLEAN. Thankfully I did back up the work drive, and the storage drive was already backed up. It'll take days to rebuild the work drive. I'm not even going to rebuild the storage drive until I get the storage server built.

#2 Since I had the time I DLed updates for all programs that I use, that needed such. Always a good idea. (probably the ONLY good idea) So I thought I'd try to make a nLITE version of Win2k. I incorporated Win2k SP4 into it. That didn't work right. It had settings wrong and it was a mess. So I reinstalled a fresh copy of Win2k - the factory type.

Because SP4 was on the work partition, and I didn't back it up, I had to DL SP4 again - 2+ hour DL. Got it installed. Then found my startup disk was missing. All the stuff I use to install Windows gone. Dissipated, kaput... Another 3 hours of DLing to get all the stuff I need, auto patcher, searching around for the daylight savings time patch for Win2k. You name it. Finally after 2 days the system is working, with the critical stuff installed and configured.

Thunderbird is the royal class ASS in setting up.

Now I find that ketnar.org's mail system is completely down. [info]frosttalon sent me a story they're working on for me. I'll post it in it's entirety on my web site once I get permission and it's fully in.

Anyway, I managed to putty into ketnar, tried 4 different e-mail programs till I found they use MUTT. Figured out how to save the attachment, and got it on the HD. (I've left it on the server just in case something else screws up...) and loved it! :) Quite a blessing from the shitass week I've had.

But now I'm totally worn out, needing a long break from the systems. So the next week I'll get caught up on replies, and stay off the system as much as I can.

This did have some benefits. I always try to see the reason for something bad happening. In this case, the system was getting long in the tooth. (See [info]srain? I can keep a Windows system running a long time!) It was over a year since I re-installed it last, and even with the maintenance, it was running into problems. But I found that the imager works with the SATA drives finally, and nLITE works too (It's just I don't work right at times :). So I'll use my laptop as an experiment to get both of these things working. Once I get them working, then I'll re-install zeus again so I can make that virginal copy, and the installed copy. Then I can wipe and reinstall every 6 months or if I get malware, and not have to do all this shit over again. Especially since I have more important things to do, than do something MS should have made a fracking lot easier!

For ones who came into my LJ late: Virginal copy means a copy of Windows installed; All service packs, fully updated (via autopatcher one of the BEST programs available), fully malware scanned and cleaned, plus amour installed (Zonealarm, BOClean, Spyware guard, a memory manager), drivers, etc. A copy ready for programs. Then a installed copy - The virtual copy + programs I normally used and ready to go. Installed is where I'm at now.

30 - 60 minutes after a wipe and the system is back on line. That's what I'm looking for. Not 18h like it takes now.

So anyway, I'm thinking of kicking Murphy out. But don't want him to go on the street, anyone want to give him a home?

Weirdness [Jul. 8th, 2008|12:44 pm]

[Current Location |At work, alas]
[mood | shocked]

Just looking at the sky, if the leaves weren't obvious on the trees and I didn't know that the outdoor temperature is 80+F, I'd say it was about to snow. Long parallel folds of overcast gray gloom...

Something even stranger, though. I was doing some checking for items that are scarce in libraries on Worldcat and found several Sofawolf and Bad Dog Books titles were listed by Alibris (a used booksellers' clearinghouse.) Out of curiousity, I went to see the prices and number of copies.

Gah! Copies of Kyell Gold's Volle and Tim Susman's Common and Precious being offered at prices as high as $99 each. Do these booksellers not realize that these books are still in print and can be purchased from the publisher or even Amazon for about $20? So I went to look at my preferred used book clearinghouse, ABEBooks where I found Kyell Gold's books at $53.50 each. What on earth is going on here? Are people really being ripped off like that because they aren't smart enough to order from Amazon or Sofawolf or Bad Dog?

I had to check this out, not just for my love of frilly things, but because I was on a mission to see [info]dressdragn again. She hadn't posted about going but I knew I'd see her there because she's like, the Yakuza head of cosplay in NYC.

The event was at Kinokuniya book store and there were discounts for anyone dressed up. So I put on my rose summer dress and cute shoes and headed out.
